Zimbabwe’s mining sector is one of the most water-intensive industries in the country. From platinum and gold operations in the Midlands to lithium mining in Goromonzi, every mine requires reliable access to clean, process-grade water — and an equally reliable way to manage the wastewater it generates.

At Blue Steel Water, we have been delivering industrial water treatment solutions across sub-Saharan Africa for over 20 years. We understand that no two water sources are the same, and that the demands placed on water systems in mining environments are unlike any other. This is why we engineer every solution from the ground up — tailored to your source water, flow rate, budget, and site conditions.

Below we outline the three core water treatment service categories we offer to Zimbabwe’s mining industry, supported by real project case studies from our team in the field.

Why Water Treatment Is Critical in Mining Operations

Mining operations depend on water at virtually every stage of the production process — mineral processing, dust suppression, equipment cooling, slurry transport, and worker welfare. Without treated water, operations grind to a halt. Without properly managed wastewater, mines face regulatory non-compliance, environmental damage, and reputational risk.
Zimbabwe’s mining sites face unique water challenges including high Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in borehole and groundwater sources, suspended solids and turbidity from surface runoff and excavation activity, heavy metal contamination from ore processing, hard water that causes scale buildup in boilers and cooling towers, remote locations far from municipal water infrastructure, and fluctuating water demand tied to production cycles.
Blue Steel Water addresses all of these challenges with purpose-built industrial systems, designed and manufactured to perform in the harshest conditions.

1. Process Water Treatment & Purification

The backbone of any mining water strategy is the ability to take raw, contaminated water — whether from a borehole, dam, river, or recycled source — and treat it to a quality suitable for process use.
Blue Steel Water designs and installs high-capacity filtration and purification systems for mining operations of all sizes. Our process water treatment plants incorporate a multi-stage treatment approach, beginning with pre-filtration to remove suspended solids and particulates using Activated Filter Media (AFM) — a superior alternative to traditional sand media. This is followed by industrial Reverse Osmosis (RO) to remove dissolved salts, heavy metals, and chemical contaminants at the molecular level. We supply RO plants ranging from 1m³ to 500m³ per hour, custom-designed to your specific water analysis and flow requirements. Water softening systems protect infrastructure from scale caused by hard water, and UV or chemical disinfection ensures microbiologically safe water for worker welfare and sensitive process applications.

Case Study: 18,000 L/hr RO Plant for a Zimbabwe Mining Operation

Blue Steel Water completed the full design, supply, and installation of a high-performance water treatment plant for a leading mining operation in Zimbabwe.

The mine required a consistent supply of high-quality process water for mineral processing and equipment cooling, treating challenging borehole water with elevated TDS and hardness levels.

At the core of the system is the LPRO-B412-18000 reverse osmosis unit, capable of delivering 18,000 litres of treated water per hour. The RO membrane array — arranged in multiple parallel pressure vessels — removes dissolved salts, heavy metals, and other contaminants, producing consistently pure process water.

Upstream of the RO system, a double filtration stage uses DTFS24x72 pressure vessels packed with Activated Filter Media (AFM) to remove suspended solids and organic matter before the water reaches the membranes — protecting membrane life and reducing long-term operational costs.

A CNP vertical multistage high-pressure pump delivers the feed pressure required for efficient RO performance, while a cartridge pre-filter housing provides a final polish before the membranes. The entire system is managed by a stainless steel control panel featuring three pressure gauges and dual flow meters, giving operators real-time visibility of system performance at all times.

A dedicated water softening system — comprising fibreglass pressure vessels with automatic regeneration — completes the treatment train, protecting all downstream equipment from scale buildup.

Output: 18,000 litres per hour | Core Unit: LPRO-B412-18000 RO System | Pre-filtration: Double-stage DTFS24x72 vessels with AFM media | High-pressure pump: CNP vertical multistage | Application: Mineral processing and equipment cooling water

2. Containerised & Remote Deployment Solutions

One of the most significant challenges facing Zimbabwe’s mining industry is the remote location of many operations. Sites across Mashonaland, Matabeleland, and beyond are often far from reliable infrastructure — making conventional, fixed water treatment plants difficult and expensive to establish.

Blue Steel Water’s containerised water treatment plants solve this problem directly. Housed within standard shipping containers, these self-contained units can be transported to any site, connected to a raw water source, and commissioned rapidly — delivering clean water with minimal civil works required.

For large-scale, high-volume applications, our skid-mounted filtration systems offer a powerful alternative: factory-assembled, pre-tested, and ready for deployment with straightforward on-site connection. The skid format also allows for modular expansion as production demands grow.

These systems are ideal for remote gold, lithium, and platinum mining sites, temporary or seasonal operations, emergency water supply during infrastructure failure, and operations requiring phased scale-up.

Case Study: 80m³/hr AFM & GAC Skid-Mounted Filtration System

This project represents one of our largest skid-mounted filtration builds to date — an 80,000-litre-per-hour multi-media filtration system currently being manufactured for deployment at a mining site in Zimbabwe.

Six large-capacity pressure filter vessels are arranged in two parallel banks of three on a single heavy-duty galvanised steel skid frame, complete with grated steel walkways for safe operator access. The vessels are filled with a dual-media combination of Activated Filter Media (AFM) and Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), delivering two critical treatment functions in one compact system.

AFM provides superior mechanical filtration, removing suspended solids and fine particulates to a higher standard than conventional sand filtration. GAC adsorbs dissolved organics, chlorine, and chemical contaminants — critical for protecting downstream RO membranes and ensuring water quality for sensitive process applications.

Large-diameter uPVC inlet and outlet manifold pipework runs the full length of the skid, distributing flow evenly across all six vessels and ensuring balanced hydraulic loading at these high flow rates.

The system is controlled by a touchscreen PLC panel with automated backwash sequencing, meaning vessel regeneration happens automatically without operator intervention — minimising downtime and reducing the burden on site staff. Dual heavy-duty stainless steel centrifugal pumps operate in a duty/standby configuration, providing full flow redundancy so the system continues operating without interruption even during routine pump maintenance.

Flow Rate: 80m³/hour (80,000 litres per hour) | Vessels: 6 x large-capacity pressure filter vessels | Media: AFM and GAC dual-media | Pumps: Dual stainless steel centrifugal — duty/standby | Controls: Touchscreen PLC with automated backwash | Application: High-volume mining process water pre-treatment

3. Industrial Water Treatment Chemicals

Equipment alone is not enough. Maintaining optimal water quality across a mining operation — particularly in boilers, cooling towers, condensers, and process circuits — requires an ongoing chemical treatment programme tailored to your specific water chemistry and operational demands.

Blue Steel Water supplies a comprehensive range of industrial water treatment chemicals for the mining sector. This includes scale inhibitors and antiscalants to prevent mineral scale deposition in RO membranes and heat exchangers, corrosion inhibitors to protect metal pipework and vessels in acidic mine water environments, coagulants and flocculants to accelerate settling of suspended solids in raw water pre-treatment, pH adjustment chemicals to maintain optimal balance for both process requirements and equipment protection, and biocides to control biological fouling in cooling towers and water storage systems.

Our chemical supply programme is backed by technical expertise and on-site data collection, ensuring your dosing is always matched to actual water conditions — not guesswork. We monitor system performance, analyse water samples, and adjust programmes as your water source and operational demands change. This proactive approach has delivered measurable results for mining and industrial clients across Zimbabwe, with documented improvements in equipment performance, reduced maintenance costs, and extended asset lifespan.
